Dark Circles
Under eye circles are commonly characterized by dark shadows and/or hollows underneath the eyes. In most cases, the dark circles are caused by blood vessels that can be seen through the skin. The skin around the eyes is extremely thin, making it more transparent. When blood passes through the vessels nearest to the surface of the skin, it can produce a bluish tint. Many people believe that dark shadows are caused by lack of sleep, however, while this can be a contributing factor, in most people they are simply hereditary.
Age can also be a cause of dark circles and they can certainly become more noticeable through ageing. This is due to the loss of collagen that occurs through ageing; the skin on the face becomes thinner and therefore more translucent. Loss of fat in the face, which also happens when we age, can result in under eye hollowing.
Puffiness
In some people, rather than having hollows under the eyes, the eye bags actually protrude outwards, resulting in a “puffy” appearance instead. This is usually the result of fluid retention, which can be caused by hormones, diet, alcohol and tobacco. Ageing can also play a part in this as the skin becomes thinner and the fat pad that sits underneath the eye can move or increase in size due to the weakening of other muscles in the face.
Under Eye Hollowing and Dark Circles Treatment
When dermal filler is injected into the hollow area under the eye, it helps to plump out the area, making it appear flatter and smoother and also reducing the appearance of dark shadows.
PRP (aka the "Vampire Facelift") uses growth factors taken from your own blood to repair and rejuvenate the skin. When injected under the eye, the platelet rich plasma rejuvenates the area, plumping it up and improving fine lines and wrinkles.
